Interviewees will meet key leadership from the VTCSOM faculty and administration, including the Director of Admissions and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Interview day activities will include presentations of the VTCSOM curriculum, an overview and tour of facilities, an orientation to the interview process, and lunch, as well as the actual interviews.  All interviewees should plan to be on campus from 8:00 a.m. until approximately 4:00 p.m.

Multiple-Mini-Interviews

VTCSOM will utilize a Multiple-Mini Interview (MMI) process using predetermined scenarios. The MMI interview technique was developed and implemented by McMaster University in Ontario for their M.D. program. Applicants rotate through 10 interview stations that will last eight minutes each. No prior medical knowledge is required for the MMI. The MMI interviewers will be a mix of Carilion clinicians, Carilion Clinic administrators, and members of the Roanoke community who have been trained in the MMI interview technique.

In the MMI process, each interviewer will pose a pre-developed scenario to each interviewee related to a single theme (such as “Professionalism /Interdisciplinary Teamwork”). Interviewees rotate through scenario stations so that all interviewers have an opportunity to assess all interviewees within the context of their respective scenario being discussed. This allows interviewers to rank interviewees using predetermined evaluation criteria based on qualities that reflect the interviewees’ potential to develop into excellent clinicians and innovators in the biomedical sciences and public health. The MMI can also assess the applicant’s ability to function in team settings, an important skill for our small group learning curriculum.  One station will be a traditional, non-structured interview with a representative of the Admissions Committee.
