2010 White Coat Ceremony Theme 2: Personal Stories

Every one of us has a story and every one of us has taken our own unique road to arrive at medicine. Mine started in a hospital, as a third grader ready to go under for an open heart surgery. Terrified, vulnerable, not knowing if I would ever wake up again.  My parents had trusted a surgeon in a white coat to return their daughter to them, with the hope of a better quality life. When I put on my white coat, I will think of the scared eight-year-old girl, hidden deep beneath it, who once trusted physicians with her life, and I will do everything I can to honor and uphold that tradition of trust in my own patients.
