Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine now recruiting charter class

Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s educational program leading to the M.D. degree has received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and is now recruiting students for the school’s first class of aspiring physicians. This charter class of 42 students will begin their studies in the fall of 2010 and graduate with an M.D. degree four years later in the spring of 2014.

Prospective students can apply through the American Medical College Application Service.

“Preliminary accreditation for VTC is a direct result of the vision by leadership at Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic to capitalize on core strengths at each of these institutions,” states Cynda Johnson, founding dean and president, VTC School of Medicine. “This is also a testament to the incredible amount of determination, collaboration, and creativity of the VTC team. I am very proud of the team and thrilled to begin recruiting our first class.”

Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine's overarching goal is to educate clinicians who will continuously incorporate knowledge gained from research and scientific inquiry into the everyday practice of medicine. The VTC physician will be well prepared to enter any area of medicine and will possess the skills needed to become part of an interdisciplinary team. VTC graduates will be thought leaders in their chosen field, whether it is community or academic medicine, research, health policy or health information technology.

VTC’s rigorous admissions process selects students with the resilience to excel in a challenging environment.  Specific attributes that we look for are:

  • Evidence of leadership, scholarship, and motivation for a career in medicine
  • Individuals who are committed to serving the needs of members of society and whose accomplishments reveal originality and a capacity for independent, critical thinking.
  • A great affinity to a broad educational and personal experience that includes the humanities, social science and social services.  Admissions to VTC will also require:
    • Altruism
